Career Profile: Julia Dzafic of Lemon Stripes, Lemon Stripes Store, & Nourish Snacks

Lemon Stripes is one of my favorite blogs because the author, Julia Dzafic, is authentic, honest, well-rounded, and stylish. Whenever I read her blog I learn something new because she covers everything from outfits, healthy recipes, and health and wellness advice to interior design, blogging tips, and entertaining. She runs her blog, her own store, works at Nourish Snacks, and still manages to have a social life. I am so thrilled for you to read all of her advice!

1. What was your career background? I’d love to hear about how you got where you are now.

My first job in New York was as a Sales Assistant at a Bridal Magazine. So random and I hated it! I went from there to an Executive Assistant at the Institute for Integrative Nutrition (A holistic nutrition school, of which I’m also a graduate. Fun fact!). In 4 years at IIN, I moved up the ranks until I became the Director of Sales and lead a team of almost 40 people. It was an unreal experience but I left last year to start my business, the Lemon Stripes Store.

After about 8 months of working for myself, I knew it wasn’t for me. I felt lonely and stressed out financially and was ready to get back into the work force. The stars aligned because I was hired at Nourish Snacks only 3 weeks after I made that decision. My career path has been part luck, part hustling my ass off, and part politics.

You are the head of online marketing at Nourish Snacks, how do you manage your blog, your business, your full time job, and your social life? Do you have any tips for time management?

If I had a good answer for this, I’d probably feel a lot less exhausted right now! It’s a constant struggle to balance my many projects. I am beginning to realize that I have too many pots on the stove and I need to pull back somewhere. In the meantime, I am hyper-organized and try to make a schedule for every day down to the quarter hour (no joke!).

Turning off and relaxing is probably the most important thing that I do for myself. Even though it’s rare, it makes me much more productive in the long run. Exercise and date nights are like gold for me too. Without those two things, I would for sure lose my mind!

What motivated you to start Lemon Stripes?

My friends and family were constantly coming to me for style advice so I figured I must be doing something right fashion-wise. I started the blog as a creative outlet to share my thoughts with them and it somehow blossomed into a money-making highly trafficked website. I never thought in a million years that I’d have thousands of followers looking to me for fashion and lifestyle advice. Sometimes I have to pinch myself.

What is you favorite thing about blogging?

I bet no blogger ever says this but they’re all thinking it: Getting free clothes is amazing. You have no idea how many boxes of amazing things I get every week. It’s awesome. On a less superficial level, I’ve met incredible people with similar interests and creativity. The women I’ve met in the blogging world have become some of my closest friends.

I also love having a space where I can just be me and no one else can dictate how I do that. I post what I want when I want and it feels good to have that control over a project.

What has been one of the biggest challenges in growing a lifestyle blog and what advice would you give to other bloggers or people who want to start blogging?

My advice to new bloggers is boring and obvious but BE AUTHENTIC. There are so many bloggers out there now and I find half of them copying each other’s styles, designs, and even writing. People will want to look at your blog for you so own that.

The biggest challenge in blogging for me has been to find my voice. At first I tried to do everything that Emily (Cupcakes & Cashmere) was doing, then I found myself trying to emulate the styles of other top bloggers. It just looked ridiculous. Now I’m 100% me all the time and people really resonate with that!

You collaborate with so many amazing companies! What advice do you have for bloggers that hope to collaborate with brands.

It’s been a journey but when I first starting collaborating with brands, I would schedule an hour a day for emailing companies that I wanted to work with and would send each brand a personalized email (not a template!) letting them know why we would be a good fit for working together.

Today, brands usually reach out to me and I have learned to be VERY clear on the terms of collaboration. If the brand has a big following on social, for example, I always ask that they promote me as a part of our partnership.

My advice would be to only work with brands that truly resonate with you. For a while I was saying yes to everything and I felt like I was losing control of my blog because every day was another scheduled sponsored post and they didn’t necessarily resonate with my style. I’m very picky now!

What is one thing that you wish you had known when you were starting out blogging and building your business?

I wish I had known what a commitment they would both end up being. I didn’t realize what kind of hours I would have to spend on my blog and my business.

What is a typical day like for you?

You’re not going to believe me but this is my average weekday. Wake up and do a 5 minute meditation followed by 30 minutes of emails and social media. I get ready for work and then work on blog emails for another 15-20 minutes. I work from 9-5 as the head of online marketing for a new healthy snack company, Nourish Snacks. Sprinkled throughout the day, I sometimes have to take calls or meetings for Lemon Stripes which my boss understands and encourages.

After work I usually have to attend some sort of blog/press event followed by 30 minutes-1 hour of packing up orders from the Lemon Stripes store. Somewhere in there I manage to cook dinner for my husband. It’s a constant whirlwind!

Where do you see yourself. your blog, and your company, in the next five years?

I honestly have no idea. I know that I want to buy a home and have kids in the next 3 years so that’s where my main goals lie. I hope to continue to learn and grow in my job and with Lemon Stripes. For once I’m ok with the unknown because I feel so happy and blessed in both areas of my life.

What is on your desk right now?

Three BKR water bottles full of PH balanced water (I’m a weirdo about my water), a note pad, a bottle of Kombucha, a monogrammed pencil holder, Tocca hand lotion, John Masters Organics rose water spray, and my Beats Pill!

What advice would you give to someone who is about to graduate from college and enter “the real world?”

Life is about to get really real! I’d tell them to take a class on personal finance (start those 401k’s, ladies!) and start making short and long term personal and career goals as a part of your routine. Things can start to get really busy but take time for yourself.

The Secrets to Getting Hired: How to Stand Out as a Recent Graduate

1. It’s Not Me, It’s You: This is the cardinal rule of getting a job. You need to have an it’s not me, it’s you mentality. Companies hire because they need someone to come in and solve a problem. You need to show why you are the person who can solve their problem. When a hiring manager is looking at your resume and cover letter, he or she wants to see why you are the perfect candidate for the position. You need to show that you have the skills and experiences necessary to succeed in the role. One way to do this is to read the job description carefully and mirror some of the language used. Think about what they want and draw parallels between your past experiences and the job requirements. When you apply to a job online, your resume usually goes through an Applicant Tracking System. The system will scan for keywords related to the job description and your resume has a better chance of being seen by a person if the keywords are there. You should also remember this rule when you land your interview

2. Don’t Undermine Yourself: If I had a dollar for every time an entry-level applicant wrote or said something along the lines of, “I know I’m not qualified for this position but…” or “I know I don’t have the experience required,” I could buy at least ten lattes. Don’t explain why you aren’t qualified for the position. Don’t undermine yourself. Explain your transferrable skills instead.

3. Explain Your Transferrable Skills:  If you haven’t held jobs or internships, show the transferable skills you have learned from holding leadership positions on campus or academic projects such as completing a senior thesis. If you have had jobs and internships but are trying to switch industries, emphasize your transferable skills and demonstrate how they are relevant to the position you seek.

4. Clean Up Your Online Presence: There has been a debate among human resources professionals about the legality and ethics of using social media to screen candidates but for the most part, you should assume that your social media will be searched. Err on the side of caution. I like to use what I call The New York Times Test. If I wouldn’t want something to appear on the cover of The New York Times, I don’t post it. Don’t assume that anything is actually private – just don’t post anything inappropriate or incriminating.

5. Build a Personal Brand: Instead of letting your social media hinder your job search, use social media to build your personal brand. Use Twitter and Facebook to interact with companies you admire. Use LinkedIn to share your achievements and accomplishments. Create a blog and Pinterest to showcase your portfolio and non-academic work.

6. Use Your Network: Use your network to set up informational interviews with people. Use your alumni network, meet with your parent’s friends, message people on LinkedIn and set up as many informational interviews as possible. Remember that the goal of an informational interview isn’t to get a job or ask for a job – it is to learn more about the industry and different career paths. You may end up finding a mentor or sponsor, or connecting with someone who can help you find a job but your primary focus should be learning.

7. Practice Makes Perfect:  Always practice before your interview! When I was interviewing for jobs, I wrote bullet point answers for The Prepary’s list of the ten most common interview questions. I also conducted mock interviews with friends and family. It is important not to come off as rehearsed and inauthentic, but knowing I had prepared in advance made me much more confident during each round of interviews. You should also know how to discuss your resume. Practice intelligently explaining your position and achievements at each place you’ve worked. 

8. Research: Google recent news articles and read the company website. I was able to impress interviewers by congratulating them on recent achievements and accolades, knowing recently published studies and reports, and having a thorough understanding of the company. This shows that you value their time and that you are passionate about the opportunity!

9. Use the C-A-R or S-T-A-R method: If you use the C-A-R or S-T-A-R method your resume becomes an accomplishment-based resume. S-T-A-R stands for situation, task, action, result. Explain a brief description of the situation; explain the task you had to complete; describe the actions you used to complete the task; explain the results. C-A-R stands for challenge, action, result. Explain the challenge you had, the action you took to resolve it, and show the result. Whenever possible, use numbers and statistics to quantify your results and explain how the results had an impact on the company as a whole. Rather than a laundry list of responsibilities, your resume will become a compelling account of the value that only you can and will bring to the position. Explain your current career and your skills in a way that shows that you are a valuable asset for the prospective employer. A job interview is essentially a test of your storytelling skills – you have to explain your career and your skills in a way that shows that you are a valuable asset for the employer. You don’t want to just say you are a team player or that you are diligent – you want to show it by telling a story about a time that you exhibited those traits.

10. Ask the Right Questions: When you go to a job interview, you will almost always be asked if you have any questions for the interviewer. I think that one cardinal rule of asking questions at the end of an interview is to remember JFGI (Just Fucking Google It). If the question is something that you could have found out on Google, or on the company website, don’t ask it because it looks like you didn’t prepare for the interview. Instead, close the interview on a positive note by showcasing the research you did on the company, finding out next steps, and learning what you need to know to evaluate whether the job is right for you. You will end up spending most of your time at work so it is important to choose somewhere where you will be happy!

11. Prep Your References: Always ask for permission before you list someone as a reference. There are a few reasons why this is an important step. One reason is that it gives the person an out. If the person doesn’t think that they worked closely enough with you or didn’t have a positive working relationship with you they can say that it would be better for you to choose someone else. Another reason to ask permission is because it is the polite thing to do. Asking permission also gives you the opportunity to explain the company, the position, and any information that might be pertinent to helping them provide a stellar reference for you. Checking references is usually one of the last steps of the hiring process so it means that there is a high likelihood that you will get the job – don’t let poor or lackluster references keep you from your dream job!

12. Be Yourself: During interviews you want to show why you are unique and the value that you will bring to the organization. It is important to be authentic. I believe that you can only be happy when you are accepted for being you. You should strive to be the best possible version of yourself, but don’t try to be someone your not.
