I love the blog Summer Wind. Sydney mixes outfit posts with helpful posts like Wallet Essentials and Useful Platforms and Apps. Her blog is also very authentic and genuine (see: Perspective, Optimism, and Blogger Bloopers.)
I hope that you enjoy getting to know her as much as I have.
1. How did you come up with the idea and topic for Summer Wind?
When I was a freshman in college, I was Googling “monogrammed towels” (or something like that) and came across Monograms and Manicures. I didn’t really even know what a blog was at the time, and I found myself coming back day after day to read Monograms and Manicures! After my second semester my freshman year I had a lot of free time during summer break so Summer Wind was born! Summer Wind is named after my favorite Frank Sinatra song.
2. If your blog had mission statement what would it be?
I don’t have an official mission statement, but ultimately, Summer Wind’s mission is to provide a bright spot in others’ day by creating and offering unique, fun and interesting content.
3. What advice would you give to people who have just started or would like to start a blog?
It sounds so cliche to say, ‘be yourself and write about what you love’, but it couldn’t be truer. I wouldn’t love blogging if I wasn’t writing about things I generally love.
I would also encourage bloggers to make connections and take advantage of opportunities. It’s one of the best benefits of being a blogger. I have met so many amazing women and have had so many incredible opportunities through blogging and it really makes all of the hard work worth it.
Lastly I would advise new bloggers to not let blogging overwhelm them. There are so many blogs, lots of competition and ‘keeping up with the Jones’ that goes on throughout the blogosphere it can be disheartening and discouraging.
4. How do you get inspiration for posts?
From all over. If you saw the wacky notes all over my desk and in my phone and even in my camera roll, you’d think I was partly insane, but I am always getting ideas. Although, that’s not to say that I don’t get stuck every once in a while. I stockpile my ideas, but at the same time, sometime I find myself just plain uninspired.. it’s a little cheesy, but that’s when I turn to Pinterest for motivational quotes to keep me chugging along.
5. What is your favorite thing about blogging?
I think there are two things that I love most about blogging. I love that I have so much support from family, friends and readers. I never take the overwhelming support for granted. I am floored daily by the amazing e-mails I receive from Summer Wind readers, other bloggers, family and friends.
The second thing I love about blogging is that it is a personal diary for me. I may not share every detail of my life on Summer Wind, but I know that when I look back on Summer Wind in 30 years, I will be so glad to have so much of my life on record.
6. What three words would you use to describe your style?
Classic, timeless, preppy.
7. What are your favorite blogs to read?
I have a ton of blogs that I try to catch up on weekly. I think my favorite is Atlantic Pacific.
8. What can you not leave home without?
Well… I left my wallet at home today (for the first time ever), so after experiencing a day without a wallet, my answer should be my wallet… but that’s so boring. I’m going to have to say either sunglasses, mascara, coffee or my iPhone.
9. Your hair always looks PERFECT. What are your secrets?
Thank you 🙂 . I honestly don’t have a secret technique! I wash and condition with Dove (I get the big bottles from Sam’s Club because I go through conditioner like it’s my job). Then I towel dry until it’s damp. Spray all over with It’s a 10 miracle leave in conditioner, brush it through with a wet brush. blow dry with the Hana Air hair dryer…no technique in the blow drying, just shake my head and blow dryer all around until it’s all dry! Then I curl with a conair barrel iron from Target. I always curl my hair away from my face. I think what most people don’t think to do is to brush their hair after they are done curling. I usually always run a brush through my freshly curled hair and then play with it with my fingers until it all looks uniform. I also sometimes will curl my hair at night and then just go to bed and wake up and brush my hair in the morning and I’m good to go. I should have prefaced this by saying that my hair is SUPER thick and also holds a curl really well.
P.S. Here are a few of my favorite of her outfits!
