I am loving the brand Rikshaw Design.
“Rikshaw Design founder and designer Catherine Fitzsimmons has spent a life traveling the globe- she’s been an au pair in Paris, did a bike tour across Cape Cod, backpacked across Europe, spent a summer at a dude ranch and camped across the western part of the US. The Virginia native has always been a spontaneous adventurer and is continually drawn to a creative, bohemian existence. An innate traveler who takes inspiration from each of her journeys, Catherine’s Southern roots are equally as important to her aesthetic and are reflected in the gracious styling of the line and fine attention to detail.
As a visual merchandiser for Ralph Lauren and later a textile buyer at Pottery Barn, Catherine’s travels took her to India where she fell in love with the people and the beauty of the country. Captivated by the tradition of Indian block-printing, Catherine dreamt of a way to bring the compelling color combinations and charming imperfections of block printing to a lifestyle collection here in the states. She created Rikshaw Design in 2008, launching with bohemian baby bedding and accessories.
“Watching the Indian artisans create gorgeous block printed textiles in person left me mesmerized”, says Catherine. “I fell in love with the imperfections of a block print, the saturated colors, and the true artistry and dedication that it takes to finish just one meter of fabric. I instantly knew that I wanted to incorporate those techniques with my design sensibility for pattern and color, to create a line that would be loved both by the child as well as the parent. While our customers might first be drawn in by the prints and color palette, they are won over by our quality- each piece is soft, comfortable, and truly get better with age.”
The Rikshaw Design collection includes crib sets, pillows, and accessories, all hand block-printed on the softest Indian cotton voile. The line is easy to mix and match with coordinating prints, florals, stripes and motifs. Spring 2010 marks the launch of baby apparel and larger sized bedding. Stop by Catherine’s blog for her delightful thoughts and things.”
